3 Easy Tips to Turn Flossing into a Daily Habit

For many of us, flossing our teeth is a touchy subject. Sure, we’re aware of how important flossing is in maintaining good oral health. Yet, we can’t seem to stick to it on a daily basis. If we do succeed in flossing our teeth daily, it’s usually only for a week or two. Inevitably, we start to slack off again after a while. But, take heart! Here are three tips to help turn flossing into a daily habit.

1) Become a Multitasking Flosser

We all live busy lives. But, admit it — there are moments throughout the day or night when your hands are idle. Next time you’re watching tv, surfing the internet, taking a long, relaxing shower or bath, or even stuck in traffic, multitask and reach for the dental floss.

2) Use Visual Reminders

Out of sight, out of mind. If that’s the case, make your dental floss more visible. Put it in various places where you’ll always be sure to see it. Place it on your bathroom counter next to your toothbrush. Keep it in the shower. Put it in your lunch bag. Stick a post-it note on your computer screen. Use dental floss or notes as visual cues to remind you that flossing should be part of your daily routine.

3) Combine Flossing with Another Daily Habit

Convince yourself that brushing your teeth or washing your face are not complete without flossing. Don’t look at them as two activities but as one. With time (habits typically require three weeks to develop and stick), you’ll associate the two habits together. This will lead you to feel you can’t do one without the other.

After some time and commitment, flossing will come naturally. It won’t even seem like effort. Your gums will thank you for it!
